Cycle City Network Nepal Wins Global Recognition for “Pedal Paathshala” under the Healthy Cycling Challenge
Cycle City Network Nepal (CCNN) is proud to announce that our initiative “Pedal Paathshala: Community Learning on Wheels” has been selected as one of the three global winners of the Healthy Cycling Challenge, organized by the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) in partnership with Cities for Better Health. This prestigious international competition recognizes innovative and scalable cycling projects that promote health, sustainability, and social inclusion in urban neighbourhoods.
Pedal Paathshala stood out among 243 applications from over 45 countries around the world for its holistic approach to improving public health and mobility in Bharatpur, Nepal. The project integrates cycling into everyday life for children and women from marginalized communities, turning schools into hubs of active mobility and community learning. Through the establishment of bicycle libraries in ten schools, the initiative ensures that every student regardless of background has access to a bicycle for commuting and recreation. Women from local communities are trained as cycling instructors and leaders, guiding students through regular Pedal Power Lessons, safety workshops, and weekly community rides. These activities encourage healthier lifestyles, reduce dependency on motorized transport, and build confidence, leadership, and independence among women and young students alike.
Beyond the schools, the project works closely with Bharatpur Metropolitan City, local clubs, and community organizations to create safe bikeways, install cycling signage, and host events such as car-free awareness campaigns and critical mass rides. Together, these efforts are transforming Bharatpur into a model of sustainable urban mobility where cycling is not just a mode of transport but a symbol of empowerment, equity, and environmental care.
Winning this global award is a proud moment not just for CCNN but for the entire cycling community of Nepal. It affirms our belief that local, community-driven innovation can make a global impact. With this recognition, CCNN will receive international support to implement and scale the project, strengthening our mission to make Nepal’s cities healthier and more cycle-friendly.
We extend heartfelt gratitude to our incredible partners: Bharatpur Metropolitan City, Chitwan Cycle Riders Club, Green Decision Labs and Research Pvt. Ltd, MTB Bug Chitwan, 10 participating community schools of Bharatpur Metropolitan City and women’s from community groups whose support made this possible. This achievement belongs to everyone who believes that the simple act of pedaling can lead to transformative change.
As we move forward, CCNN remains committed to expanding Pedal Paathshala across more schools and cities, inspiring a new generation of active citizens and healthier communities. Together, we ride toward a future where every neighborhood is sustainable, inclusive, and full of life on two wheels.
